Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Can someone tell me the function for this on Microsoft Excel?
In cell J5, enter a function to calculate a monthly payment for the client The function will refer to the annual interest rate (B23) divided by B24, a loan term (F5) multiplied by B24, and the balanced due(I5). Refer to B23 and B24 as mixed cell references(B and B). Refer to I5 as a negative vaule(-I5) so that your result returns as a positive number.

    • ANSWER:
      Try the PMT function

  2. QUESTION:
I need HELP with and excel function!!!?
In cell J5, enter a function to calculate a monthly payment for the client. The function will refer to the annual interest rate (B23) divided by 12 months (B24), a loan term (F5) multiplied by B24, and the balance due (I5). Refer to B23 and B24 as mixed cell references (B and B). Refer to I5 as a negative value (-I5) so that your result returns a positive number.

Ive done basicall everything i can think of to write this function and I CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!

    • ANSWER:
Hi. C Masters is correct, you would use the PMT function to calculate the monthly payment. My formula is just slightly different, as you do not have to physically multiply B*F5 as you will see below. Multiplying the 2 together will also change your monthly payment result.

First you have to make sure you have the proper figures in all cells mentioned in your question.

In cell B23 would be your annual interest rate
In cell B24 is the number 12 (for 12 months of course)
In cell F5 (loan term) is the number of months the loan is for (ex:360, which is a 30 year loan)
In cell l5 is the amount of loan you are making the payments on (ex: 385,000)

In cell J5 your function would be:
      =PMT(B/B,F5,-l5)

As you can see you are dividing the annual interest (B23) by the 12 months (B24), loan term (F5), your balance due (l5).

      Hope that helps!

  3. QUESTION:
I need the formulas for these Excel questions right now, can someone please help me?
1.) In cell C5, create a VLOOKUP function that returns the membership cost that corresponds with the membership type entered in cell B5. The function will look for an exact match in the range named Membership, and return the membership cost from the second column.

2.) In cell E5, enter an IF function that will calculate the annual total. If the client has a Locker (D5) is "Yes", then add the Cost (C5) to the Locker Fee (B22). Otherwise, the function will return the Cost only. Ensure that B22 is entered as an absolute reference.

3.) In cell G5, enter a formula that will multiply the Annual Total (E5) by Years (F5) to calculate Total Due. Copy the formula down to cells G6:G13.

4.) In Cell H5, create a VLOOKUP function that returns the down payment that corresponds with the membership type entered in cell B5. The function will look for an exact match in the range named Membership, and return the down payment from the third column.

5.) The formula in cell I5 is incorrect, and contains a circular reference. Edit the formula so that is calculates the difference between Total Due and Down Payment. Copy the formula down to cells I6:I13.

6.) In cell J5, enter a function to calculate a monthly payment for the client. The function will refer to the annual interest rate (B23) divided by B24, a loan term (F5) multiplied by B24, and the balance due (I5). Refer to B23 and B24 as mixed cell references (B and B). Refer to I5 as a negative value (-I5) so that your result returns a positive number.

  9. QUESTION:
Help me with this Excel 2010 Homework, please? (2012)?
Please help me with this: I forgot how to edit the formula in question 1 in Excel and I simply don't know the formulas to the other questions after the Q1. You'll notice that on some of the questions, I skipped around; I knew how to do some of the steps so I just posted the ones I am struggling on. By the way, when you give me the formulas, give them to me in their entirety, please! I don't want to have only have only half of the formula when I enter it into a cell! >.< Also, If you do not have the ACTUAL FORMULAS (AND ACTUAL answers to these questions, DON'T RESPOND TO THIS! I DON'T want examples of how to enter a formula because that isn't what I asked for! Either give me the answers or don't respond to this!!! The questions are as follows:

[Question 1]: The formula in cell I5 (capital "eye": I, NOT the number one and not the letter ell) is incorrect, and contains a circular reference. Edit the formula so that is calculates the difference between Total Due and Down Payment. Copy the formula down to cells I6:I13.

{Question 2}: In cell J5, enter a function to calculate a monthly payment for the client. The function will refer to the annual interest rate (B23) divided by B24, a loan term (F5) multiplied by B24, and the balance due (I5). Refer to B23 and B24 as mixed cell references (B and B). Refer to I5 as a negative value (-I5) so that your result returns a positive number.

{Question 3}: In cell H18, enter a function that counts the number of entries in the range A5:A13.

{Question 4}: In cell H19, enter a function that finds the lowest value in the range J5:J13.

{Question 5}: In cell H20, enter a function that finds the average value in the range J5:J13.

{Question 6:} In cell H21, enter a function that finds the highest value in the range J5:J13.

{Question 7}: In cell H22, enter a function that finds the median value in the range J5:J13.

    • ANSWER:
A Circular reference refers to the same cell reference used in the formula in the same cell so if cell I5 has a formula like =I5 - I5 then the formula can't deduce the equation on itself.

You are best to read all the functions and how they work. having others do your homework will not help you learn anything.

I think that the function Min finds the lowest number, the function Ave is for Averages, and Max is for the highest value, but I've never use the Median function so I don't know what is used, perhaps Med?

    • ANSWER:

#2 In cell H5, enter a formula that adds the sales tax (in G5) to the base price of the car (in F5). Copy the formula down to cells H6:H16.

Refer to the annual interest rate (D21) as an absolute cell reference. Copy the function down to cells I6: I16.
#4 In cell J5, create a VLOOKUP function that returns the salesperson commission that corresponds with the base cost of the car (in F5). Use the range $C:$D as the Lookup Table, and return the commission rate from Column 2.
#5 In cell G24, enter an IF function that will calculate a bonus for the part-time sales agents. If the value in cell G19 (Total for all sales) is greater than 250000, then multiply G19 by .015. Otherwise, the function will return a value of 0 (i.e. no bonus).

    • ANSWER:
Without seeing it, hard to do..
      Couple of points:
      1) Interest rate/12 should also be divided by 100 (usually). That is, 12% interest is 0.12/12*principle (meaning 0.01 * principle per month. This is not clear in #3 if the number is "%" (ie 12%) or the actual rate (ie 0.12)
      2) Vlookup requires the search column to be alphabetically sorted. It may fail otherwise in finding the right answer.

      #1 G5 = F5*0.07
      #2 H5 = G5+F5
#3 I5 = $D/12 (and maybe/100) and look up load payment function in Excel.

After that, do your own homework ;)

    • ANSWER:
The formulas for the Excel all depends on what kind of situation you are in... For instance, if you want to calculate the cost of the product, then you will need to enter the appropriate formula, like A2 = A1 * 2

      Good luck!
